Karifuna

Classification:     Arawakan, Maipuran, Northern Maipuran, Caribbean

Dialect:      Was not intelligible with Black Carib (D. Taylor 1959). Vincentian in St. Vincent may have been closer to Black Carib than to Island Carib. Not inherently intelligible with Garífuna (D. Taylor IJAL 1959:67).

Language Use:    Became extinct in Dominica about 1920. Used as a special language of Cariban origin to address men (Berend Hoff).

Population:    Extinct

Region:         Formerly also in Lesser Antilles, excluding Trinidad.
